چکیده

It is well known that habitat fragmentation is likely to negatively affect the reproductive success of a species. Despite this fact, studies on the effects of fragmentation on reproductive success in combination with effects on natural pollination of wind-pollinated tree species are very rare. In this study, we analyzed the relationships between fragment size, components of pollination efficiency, reproductive success and progeny vigour of the highly fragmented populations of the wind-pollinated treeline species Polylepis australis (Rosaceae) in Argentina. We conducted our study in the high mountains of Córdoba, comparing pollination efficiency and reproduction between four fragment sizes. Most of our results indicate that P. australis is currently insensitive to fragmentation. However, our study revealed also a linear increase in leaf area and biomass of 40-day-old seedlings with increasing fragment size. Inbreeding problems through fragmentation as well as decreased habitat quality in small fragments are discussed as possible causes for the impaired progeny vigour. r 2007 Elsevier GmbH. Masting promotes individual- and population-level reproduction by increasing pollination efficiency.

Masting is a reproductive strategy defined as the intermittent and synchronized production of large seed crops by a plant population. The pollination efficiency hypothesis proposes that masting increases pollination success in plants. Despite its general appeal, no previous studies have used long-term data together with population- and individual-level analyses to assess pollination efficiency ...

Pollination efficiency and reproductive patterns in relation to local plant density, population size, and floral display in the rewarding Listera ovata (Orchidaceae)

Pollination efficiency and reproductive success vary strongly among populations of most animal-pollinated plant species, depending on their size and local density, whereas individual plants within populations experience varying levels of reproductive output as a result of differences in floral display. Although most orchid species have been shown to be severely pollination limited, few studies ...

Pollen clumping and wind dispersal in an invasive angiosperm.

Pollen dispersal is a fundamental aspect of plant reproductive biology that maintains connectivity between spatially separated populations. Pollen clumping, a characteristic feature of insect-pollinated plants, is generally assumed to be a detriment to wind pollination because clumps disperse shorter distances than do solitary pollen grains. Yet pollen clumps have been observed in dispersion st...

Reproductive ecology of the basal angiosperm Trithuria submersa (Hydatellaceae).

BACKGROUND AND AIMS Trithuria, the sole genus in the family Hydatellaceae, is an important group for understanding early angiosperm evolution because of its sister relationship to the ancient lineage, Nymphaeales (water lilies). Although also aquatic, Trithuria differs from water lilies in that all species are extremely small, and most have an annual life form and grow in seasonal wetlands. Ver...

Breeding system and spatial isolation from congeners strongly constrain seed set in an insect-pollinated apomictic tree: Sorbus subcuneata (Rosaceae)

In plants, apomixis results in the production of clonal offspring via seed and can provide reproductive assurance for isolated individuals. However, many apomicts require pollination to develop functional endosperm for successful seed set (pseudogamy) and therefore risk pollination-limitation, particularly in self-incompatible species that require heterospecific pollen. We used microsatellite p...
